Local Hero #6 is west sound home brewer Brian Thatcher’s gold medal winning version of this classic Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Saison Deux is pale straw yellow with an earthy, spicy yeast character complimented by a dry, cracker-like malt flavor and a firm, crisp bitterness. Lots of distinctive farmhouse ale character in this smooth and quaffable beer.

Local Hero #5: Mild Mannered Brown

The winner of the 2009 Seattle Weekly Home Brew Competition. Pale, caramel, and chocolate malts combine to create a smooth, medium bodied beer with pleasant nutty and light milk  chocolatey flavors.

Local Hero #4: Brown Brother’s Scotch Ale

Every year the Great American Beer Festival sponsors a judged beer category based on collaborations between amateur and professional brewers. Across the country home brewing clubs organize events where local hobby brewer’s entries are judged by certified judges and the Best of Show selections are made available to local participating professional brewers to select for brewing as their Pro-Am entry to the GABF.

This year, Big Al Brewing’s Pro-Am entry is based on a Strong Scotch Ale recipe developed by award winning local home brewers Mike and Steve Brown. Brown Brother’s Scotch Ale is full bodied with deeply complex malt fl avors and a clean warming finish.

Local Hero #3: Brown Brother’s Cream Ale

The best home brewed beer in the state of Washington! This is the beer that won Mike and Steve Brown the Washington Homebrewers Association Bert Grant Award, given to the very best of the Best of Show winners from local homebrew competitions. Brown Brother’s Cream Ale is light bodied and crisp with delicious light hot cereal malt flavors and a fine hop character. This is the Cream of the Crop!

Local Hero #2: Frauenbier’s Special Bitter

Local Homebrewer Ken Frauenthal won a gold medal at a local homebrew competition last fall with this classic version of a ESB. English Pale and Caramel malt combined with floral, aromatic English Hops create a smooth, balanced medium-bodied beer.
